Oakwood City School Business Advisory Committee

The Oakwood City School’s Business Advisory Council is a volunteer group of Oakwood residents who meet monthly to review the finances and business operations of the school district. They have been in existence well over twenty five years, many years before the state mandated that schools have them. Members are appointed by the Board of Education for a three-year term, which may be renewed. Many members have served for over fifteen years in this capacity. According to Oakwood School Treasurer Kevin Philo, a typical meeting would include reviewing the monthly financial report and short and long-term financial projections, updates on state school funding, and a review of a business practice that could be utilized by the school district. Special items include several months of review before a recommendation is made to the Board of Education on the need and amount of a new tax levy to go on the ballot, hosting forums on candidates for the state legislature, serving as an independent audit committee, and even participating in interviews for school administrators. The Oakwood City School’s Business Advisory Council is led by community member Barbara Telek as chairperson and usually meets the third Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Board of Education Offices.
